Monairo: a shared record of everyday purchases
Monairo makes sense when your main problem is keeping a household's expenses current. You can leave bank accounts separate, agree which spending is shared, and invite your partner into the household. A purchase saved on one phone appears on the other after synchronization.
Capture can start with a typed amount, a spoken expense or a receipt. Review the proposed fields before saving, especially the currency and total. On a paid plan, category budgets help you check how the entry changes what remains. These checks apply while recording spending; Monairo cannot stop a card payment or guarantee a warning before every purchase.
For a Canadian household, this is a manual or statement-import workflow. Monairo's active bank support covers eligible UK/EU institutions; having a Canadian-dollar budget does not add Canadian bank connectivity. After setup, manual entries can be saved offline, but live household updates need a connection. Speech recognition has separate device, language and network requirements. See the shared budget setup and voice capture guide.
Neontra: Canadian connections and a wider account view
Neontra's account aggregation is a practical reason to consider it in Canada. Its product page names Plaid, Flinks and Wealthica as connection providers and offers CSV/OFX file imports. Those are advertised options, not a guarantee that every bank, brokerage or account type will connect reliably in your setup. Neontra connection and import options.
Its budgeting tools are also substantial. The support guide describes category targets, actual spending and the amount remaining for a selected period. Transactions can be split across categories, which is useful when one store receipt includes both groceries and household supplies. Neontra budget documentation.
The wider feature set includes investment and debt tracking alongside spending. Neontra also advertises family account sharing. The pages reviewed did not establish the exact member count, separate-login setup or editing permissions, so check those details with its support team if both partners need to maintain the same budget. A fictional CAD/USD example: keep the currency visible
Adding the bare numbers 146 and 40 would incorrectly suggest CAD 14.00 remains. Save the original amount and currency, then check the converted household amount. Your card statement can also include a different applied exchange rate or fees, so compare the final recorded charge before treating an estimate as settled.
Monairo retains the original currency and amount. When a required conversion rate is unavailable, the entry remains pending conversion instead of receiving an invented rate; it does not yet contribute to converted spending totals. Review pending entries before relying on the amount left in your budget.
Neontra advertises multi-currency tracking and balances shown in USD or CAD. Its Profile support guide identifies a home-currency preference. We have not tested how a particular cross-border card charge is converted in either app; use a small sample to check the original charge, converted amount and fees. Free plans, subscriptions and trial conditions
Monairo's Free plan allows three expense entries per day. Budgets, analytics and household sharing require a subscription. Solo covers one person, Duo two and Family up to four. The store may offer eligible accounts a three-month trial, followed by automatic renewal at the selected plan's price unless cancelled. Check the Canadian store offer and renewal terms. Neontra offers a limited Free plan for manual account tracking and monthly or annual Premium subscriptions for automatic connections. Its pricing page offers CAD and USD choices. Select CAD and compare the checkout total with Monairo's Canadian store offer, including the billing period and renewal terms. Neontra pricing.
The same page describes a 14-day Premium trial without a credit card. If you do not subscribe afterwards, it says the account moves to Free and connected accounts stop synchronizing while their records remain accessible. That is a different trial arrangement from Monairo's store subscription, so compare what happens at the end as well as the trial length. Neontra trial terms.
Which app should you choose in Canada?
Choose Monairo if your priority is recording everyday shared spending by tap, voice or receipt, and you accept a manual or statement-import routine for Canadian accounts. Start with one category and confirm both partners can see and review the entries.
Choose Neontra if you want Canadian bank aggregation, a browser workspace and an account view that includes investments and debt. These advertised capabilities make it the stronger candidate for that broader task; verify the connections and household permissions you need. Bank options; account tools; web access.
For a possible switch, keep your existing records and try a short statement period first. Both describe file-import options, but that does not establish a tested migration between them. Check currencies, dates, categories and overlapping transactions before importing more. The duplicate transaction guide explains why matching amounts alone are insufficient.
